In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “Rejoice, O young man, in your youth; and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth, and walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes: but know you, that for all these things God will bring you into judgment. Therefore remove sorrow from your heart, And put away evil from your flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity”, and in chapter twelve and verse one of his book Solomon said, “remember now your Creator in the days of your youth” where we read,
Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, while the evil days come not,
Nor the years draw nigh, when you shall say, I have no pleasure in them.
The verse reads, “Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, while the evil days come not, …” Solomon began with the words, “remember now” or “recall, call to mind and make a memorial at this time of” “your Creator” which means “ your, the young man’s, One who shaped, formed and fashioned him” “in the days” or “within the sunrises to sunsets, time periods and seasons” “of your youth” which means “belonging to your, the young man’s, time of being young and youthful”, “while the evil days” or “during the time the bad, disagreeable, malignant and wicked time periods and season” “come not” which means “do not enter, fall upon or become enumerated”. Solomon instructed the “young man” to call to mind his “Maker” within the sunrises to sunsets pertaining to his being “youthful” and during the time when wicked and disagreeable “days” do not enter into his life.
The verse continues, “… Nor the years draw nigh, when you shall say, I have no pleasure in them.” Solomon added the words, “nor the years draw nigh” or “no and not in any way do the annual sets of sunrises to sunsets come close or near”, “when you shall say” which means “at the time and moment you, the young man, will utter, declare and proclaim”, “I have no pleasure in them” or “I, the young man, do not have delight, longing or desire within the days of the young man”. Solomon referred to how the “young man” would also encounter the latter times of his life within which he will not desire or have pleasure.
When we consider the words in this verse, we discover how Solomon continued to instruct the “young man” by telling him to call to mind his “Creator” or “Maker” while he was “young” because there would come a time that wickedness and displeasure would replace them and there would no longer be any pleasure within them. God knows the number of our “days”. (See Psalm 90:12) He was responsible for our birth, and He knows when we shall take our last breath. In them meantime we are to “remember” Him as our “Creator God” who sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days. When we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and equip us with His Holy Spirit who will teach us to “remember God” and to trust Him with all the wickedness and displeasure that enters our lives.
Next time Solomon shares about, “the sun, light, the moon or the stars”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
