You Shall Hear What They Say - Judges 7:11

In the book of Judges we learned how the Jehovah God told Gideon, “Arise, get you down unto the host; for I have delivered it into your hand. But if you fear to go down, go you with Phurah your servant down to the host”, and in chapter seven and verse eleven of Judges, we learn how Jehovah God told Gideon, “you shall hear what they say”  where we read,

And you shall hear what they say; and afterward shall your hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.

The verse reads, “And you shall hear what they say; and afterward shall your hands be strengthened to go down unto the host.” The writer began with the words, “and you shall hear what they say” which means “and you, Gideon, with be given the faculty to hear, perceive and understand that which the army of the Midianites are uttering, declaring and proclaiming”: “and afterward your hands be strengthened” or “and following that which you, Gideon, perceive and understand, your, Gideon’s, power, might and authority shall be made hardened, courageous, firm and resolute” “to go down unto the host” which means “to descend to the army of the Midianites”. The writer shared how Jehovah God told “Gideon” that he would perceive and understand that which the army of the Midianites were declaring, and following that Gideon would be resolute and courageous.

The verse goes on to say, “Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.” The writer continued with the words, “then went he down” which means “at that time Gideon descended” “with Purah his servant” or “alongside and beside Phurah whose name means ‘bough’ and was the servant of Gideon and probably his armor-bearer” “unto the outside of the armed men” which means “to the outskirts, border or extremity belonging to the male human beings belonging to the Midianites who were harnessed in battle array ” “that were in the host” or “who existed within the place of the encampment of the army belonging to the Midianites”. The writer shared how “Gideon” descended to the camp of the army of the Midianites along with his servant armor-bearer “Phurah”, and they proceeded to the outskirts of the location where the Midianite army was dressed in battle array.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how “Gideon” proceeded toward the lowland area where the army of the Midianites were dressed in battle array. Gideon took “Phurah”, his servant armor-bearer, with him, and they approached the extremities of where the Midianites were located just as Jehovah God designed. “Gideon” simply followed what God  said because God had a plan, and He was working it out. Step by step as “Gideon” obeyed, God fulfilled His will right before “Gideon’s” eyes. God has a plan for us as well, and when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the grave after three days, He made the way through faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord” to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and equipped with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and help us obey His plan for our lives and His Kingdom. (See John 3:16; 16:13; Acts 1:8; Ephesians 3:20)

Next time we learn how, “the Amalekites and the Midianites … were like grasshoppers”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
