A Little that a Righteous Man Has - Psalms 37:16

In Psalms chapter thirty seven David said, “The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation. Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken”, and in chapter thirty seven and verse sixteen of Psalms David shared about, “a little that a righteous man has” where we read,

A little that a righteous man has is better than the riches of many wicked.

The verse begins, “A little that a righteous man has ...” David began with the words, “a little” or “a few, light and small amount” “that a righteous man has” or “that a just, lawful and correct person whether male or female owns and possesses”. David considered the small amount that a person who lives in a correct and lawful manner owns.

The verse goes on to say, “... is better than the riches of many wicked.” David continued with the words, “is better” or “exists as good, pleasant, agreeable, excellent and more valuable” “than the riches” which means “compared to the abundant wealth” “of many wicked” or “belonging to a multitude of people who are criminal, evil, ungodly, morally wrong and hostile to God and others”. David said the small amount the “righteous” person possesses is more valuable than the abundant wealth of people who are evil and ungodly.

When we think through words in this verse, we see how David recognized the valuables possessed by both the “righteous” and the “wicked”, and he determined that the small amount that was owned by the “righteous” was of greater value than the abundance of “riches” owned by evil people. The idea is spiritual in nature, and when we consider the amount of time a person possesses earthly valuables compared to eternity, we can understand. God loves us, and His desire is that we surrender our lives to His Son Jesus so we will obtain “eternal” treasures. Earthly “riches” will some day end for all of us, but the “riches” that last forever are gained when we receive Jesus who died on the cross for our sins. When we believe and trust in Him, we will be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and receive the “riches” of God that lasts forever and ever. (See Luke 16:20 and 18:24)

Their Sword in Their Own Heart - Psalms 37:15

In Psalms chapter thirty seven David said, “The wicked plots against the just, and gnashes upon him with his teeth. The Lord shall laugh at him: for he sees that his day is coming. The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation”, and in chapter thirty seven and verse fifteen of Psalms David said, “their sword shall enter into their own heart” where we read,

Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken.

The verse begins, “Their sword shall enter into their own heart, ...” David began with the words, “their sword” or “the knife, axe, dagger or mattock of the wicked” “shall enter” or “will befall, besiege and proceed” “into their own heart” which means “into the soul, inner man, mind, will, understanding, knowledge, thinking, reflection, memory, inclination and resolution of the wicked people”. David said the “knife or dagger” belonging to the “wicked” would be driven into their own souls.

The verse continues, “... and their bows shall be broken.” David added the words, “and their bows” or “and the archery weapons consisting of bows and arrows” “shall be broken” which means “will break in pieces, be wrecked, crippled and maimed”. David said the archery weapons belonging to the “wicked” would break in pieces and be wrecked.

When we meditate upon words in this verse, we see through David how the “sword” and “bows” of “wicked” people which were intended to be used against the “righteous” would actually “enter into” the souls of the evil people who employed them. David knew Jehovah God would defend people who lived in an “upright” manner, and the idea of the “wicked” to get the better of people who are good would cause them to destroy themselves. God loves people, and His desire is for them to be in a personal, intimate relationship with Him through His Son Jesus. When we submit our lives to Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and be our protection and defense whenever opposition rises. Let us give praise, honor and glory to Jehovah God and His Son Jesus for reciprocating the unjust ways of people who rise up against His own.

The Drawn Sword of the Wicked - Psalms 37:14

In Psalms chapter thirty seven David said, “The wicked plots against the just, and gnashes upon him with his teeth. The Lord shall laugh at him: for he sees that his day is coming”, and in chapter thirty seven and verse fourteen of Psalms David said, “the wicked have drawn out the sword” where we read,

The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow,

to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation.

The verse begins, “The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, ...” David began with the words, “the wicked” or “the criminal, guilty of sin, evil and hostile to God and others” “have drawn out the sword” or “have loosened, broke forth and ungird the knife, cutting instrument, axe, dagger and mattock”, “and have bent their bow” which means “stretched, pulled back and drawn their, the wicked person's, archers' bow for hunting and battle”. David said the people who commit evil and are hostile to God and others have broke forth their cutting instruments and drawn back their hunting bows as in preparing to cut and shoot.

The verse goes on to say, “... to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation.” David continued with the words, “to cast down” or “to befall, attack, desert and waste away” “the poor and needy” which means “the afflicted, humble, weak and lowly as well as the person who is subject to oppression, abuse, trouble and begging”, “and to slay” or “and to slaughter, butcher and ruthlessly kill” “such as be of upright conversation” which means “people who are straight, correct, right, straightforward, fitting and proper in their journey, manner, direction and habits”. David said the reason the “wicked” have ungird their “sword” and drawn their “bows” was to attack and waste away people who are humble, weak and lowly and who live in a manner that is correct, right and straight.

When we consider words in this verse, we learn through David how the purpose and drive of people who commit “wickedness” is to attack and waste away those who are “right and correct”. Rather than support and encourage them, “evil” people seek to destroy those who have a correct relationship with God. God sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of every person, however, only a few humble themselves, repent of their sins and receive His gift of salvation. These people, like Jesus Himself, become persecuted and attacked for their faith and trust in Him, and they may suffer afflictions from “wicked” people. There is, however, no need to fear, God sees them all and will bring justice against those who intend to attack.

The Lord Shall Laugh at Him - Psalms 37:13

In Psalms chapter thirty seven David said, “The wicked plots against the just, and gnashes upon him with his teeth”, and in chapter thirty seven and verse thirteen of Psalms David said, “the Lord shall laugh at him” where we read,

The Lord shall laugh at him: for he sees that his day is coming.

The verse begins, “The Lord shall laugh at him:” David began with the words, “the Lord” or “Adonay or the reverential title of God as master” “shall laugh at him” or “will play with, make sport of, jest and mockingly deride the person who is criminal, evil and hostile to God and man”. David said God would mockingly deride and make sport of “wicked” people.

The verse continues, “for he sees that his day is coming.” David added the words, “for he sees” or “because, since and on account that he, the Lord Jehovah God, beholds, looks at, perceives and gives attention” “that his day is coming” which means “that his, the wicked person's, space and period of time will come to pass, befall and be brought forth”. David said Jehovah God observes the period of time when the “wicked” person will be judged.

When we think through words in this verse, we learn how David knew Jehovah God saw the future of people who are “wicked”. Although they appeared to be getting away with their pernicious acts, there was a period of time when they would give an account for their acts. God knows every word, act and deed people say and do, and we will give an account of what we have said and done in our lives. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be judged and crucified for the sins of all mankind, and anyone who believes and trusts in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with Him. Judgment day is coming, and only those who yield themselves to Jesus Christ will have their sins already judged, but woe be unto those who have only themselves to rely upon for their judgment.

The Wicked Plotting Against the Just - Psalms 37:12

In Psalms chapter thirty seven David said, “evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yes, you shall diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace”, and in chapter thirty seven and verse twelve of Psalms David said, “the wicked plots against the just” where we read,

The wicked plots against the just, and gnashes upon him with his teeth.

The verse begins, “The wicked plots against the just, ...” David began with the words, “the wicked” or “the criminal, guilty, evil and hostile to God and others” “plots against the just” or “have thoughts and devise plans of evil intent in opposition to people who are lawful, righteous, correct, justified and vindicated by God”. David said “evil” people devise heinous acts in opposition to those who are justified and righteous before God.

The verse goes on to say, “... and gnashes upon him with his teeth.” David continued with the words, “and gnashes upon him” or “and grinds and grates the just person whether male or female” “with his teeth” which means “by the use of his, the wicked person's, forefront sharp ivories”. David said the “wicked” people grind their “teeth” in disgust and anguish at the lawful and correct before God.

When we meditate upon words in this verse, we see through David the “evil intent” that people who are “wicked” have against people who are “righteous” before God. Jesus said, “If the world hate you, you know that it hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love his own: but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.” (John 15:18-20). In other words, if the “wicked” persecuted Jesus who is holy, perfect and just, we may know for a certainty that they will be in opposition to every person who puts their faith and trust in Him. God loves us, and He will forgive our sins and make righteous every person who believes and trust in His Son Jesus. We will give Him praise and honor for all eternity for His willingness to make us righteous, and His determination to rise up against those who are in opposition to us.

The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth - Psalms 37:11

In Psalms chapter thirty seven David said, “evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yes, you shall diligently consider his place, and it shall not be”, and in chapter thirty seven and verse eleven of Psalms David said, “the meek shall inherit the earth” where we read,

But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

The verse begins, “But the meek shall inherit the earth;” David began with the words, “but the meek” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the humble, afflicted, lowly, poor and weak” “shall inherit the earth” or “will seize, take possession of and occupy the country, territory, district, region and world”. David said people who are humble, lowly and afflicted will possess and occupy the world.

The verse continues, “and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.” David added the words, “and shall delight themselves” or “and will be pliable, happy and merry their own selves” “in the abundance of peace” which means “within the multitude, greatness and excellency pertaining to completeness, safety, soundness, health, welfare, prosperity, quiet, tranquility and contentment”. David said people who are “meek” will also be happy and merry within the magnitude of soundness, health, prosperity and tranquility.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how David contrasted the fate of the person who is “meek” with those who are “wicked”. The “wicked” will no longer exist, whereas the humble and lowly will possess the “earth” and enjoy “excellent tranquility”. Jesus is known as the “Prince of Peace”, (See Isaiah 9:6) and when we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us to “inherit the earth” and receive His “peace”. Let us give praise, honor and glory to God for His willingness not only to “save” us, but also to extend to us His “peace” in whatever circumstances we come.

The Wicked Shall Not Be - Psalms 37:10

In Psalms chapter thirty seven David said, “Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not yourself because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked devices to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not yourself in any wise to do evil. For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth”, and in chapter thirty seven and verse ten of Psalms David said, “ for yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be” where we read,

For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be:

yes, you shall diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.

The verse begins, “For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be:” David began with the words, “for yet a little while” or “still, again and besides a small, short and few moments in time”, “and the wicked” or “and the people whether male or female who are criminal, guilty, evil and hostile to God and men” “shall not be” which means “will in no way exist”. David said people who are evil and hostile to God and others will only remain for a short amount of time.

The verse goes on to say, “yes, you shall diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.” David continued with the words, “yes, you shall diligently consider” or “even so, also and indeed you, people who are reading and listening to David's words, will perceive, discern, understand and have insight to” “his place” which means “his, the wicked person's, station, locality, spot, room and condition”, “and it shall not be” or “and the place and position of the wicked person will in no way exist”. David said the people who are reading and listening to his words would seek to discover the position and station of the wicked, but they would in no way be found.

When we think through words in this verse, we learn through David how people who are evil and commit “wickedness” may thrive for as short time they will, but they will not endure forever. There will be a time where the readers and listeners to David's words will seek and look for the position that “wicked” people held, but they will be gone. God knows everything about everyone, and no one escapes His observance of their wickedness, evil or good. Because “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God”, (See Romans 3:23) everyone needs a “Savior” from the pending judgment of Jehovah God. When we surrender our lives to Jesus, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and judge any “wicked” person who crosses our path. God's invitation to come to Him through His Son Jesus is available to everyone, and we are wise not only to receive Him, but also to commit the “wicked” to His pending elimination.
