In the book of Judges we learned how Gideon said, “I would desire a request of you, that you would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.) And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey. And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels' necks. And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went there a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house”, and in chapter eight and verse twenty-eight of Judges, we learn how, “Midian was subdued” where we read,
Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.
The verse reads, “Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more.” The writer began with the words, “thus was Midian subdued” which means “wherefore, therefore and on this account Midian whose name means ‘strife’ and was the son of Abraham by Keturah and progenitor of the tribe of Midianites or Arabians, was humbled, bought down and made low” “before the children of Israel” or “in front and in the presence of Israel whose name means ‘God prevails’ and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob”, “so that they lifted up their heads” which means “which caused them, the people of Midian, not to carry, support, endure or exalt their, the people of Midian’s, division, company or band” “no more” or “not any longer and ever again”. The writer shared how “Midian” was humbled and brought down in the presence of the people of “Israel”, and their divisions and companies were no longer or ever again strong.
The verse continues, “And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.” The writer added the words, “and the country” which means “and the territory, region and land of Israel” “was in quietness forty years” which means “existed within tranquility and calm for forty annual sets of days” “in the days of Gideon” or “within the time periods and seasons belonging to “Gideon” whose name means ‘hewer’”. The writer shared how the land of “Israel” existed in calm and tranquility for “forty” annual sets of days during the time that “Gideon” was alive.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how “Gideon” and his three hundred men completely humbled the “Midianites”, and the “Midianites" would not raise their “heads” of pride any longer. This allowed the land of “Israel” to enjoy calm and tranquility for “forty” annual sets of days, and this lasted throughout “Gideon’s” lifetime. God had a plan for the deliverance of the people of Israel through “Gideon”, and He fulfilled that plan and brought them back to calm times again. We may remember that the people of “Israel” encountered the oppression of the “Midianites” because they forsook Jehovah God, and we shall see what they do after the “forty year” calm they experienced. For now, let us consider our own lives. God loves us, sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for us and was also raised from the dead after three days. He will bring peace and tranquility into our lives when we submit to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord” as He forgives our sins, grants us everlasting life and puts His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth so we live in peace with God and experience the peace of God regardless of what we encounter. (See Romans 5:1; Philippians 4:7; Colossians 3:15)
Next time we learn how, “Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
