Mercies New Every Morning Lamentations 3:23

In Jeremiah's lament over the destruction of Jerusalem and Judah, he expressed where he drew his hope: “It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.” In verse twenty-three of chapter three we see how often those mercies and compassions were and are available. He wrote:

They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

The verse begins, “They are new every morning:” Imagine the encouragement Jeremiah felt as he penned these words. “Every morning” when he awoke there was a fresh supply of God's mercies and compassions available to him. As though he used every ounce of mercy and compassion from the day before, Jeremiah could draw from the endless well of the LORD'S everlasting “goodness, kindness and faithfulness”. Every time the sun arose the beams thereof would stream “mercy, mercy, mercy and compassion, compassion, compassion” upon him.

The verse goes on to say, “great is thy faithfulness.” Not only did Jeremiah receive the LORD'S mercies and compassions every day, he also knew “great” or “much, many, abundant and numerous” was God's “faithfulness” which means “firmness, fidelity, steadfastness, and steadiness”. While Jeremiah enjoyed the daily supply of mercy and compassion, he knew that the LORD would be true and stand strong every time Jeremiah needed Him.

We have only touched the surface of the meaning of these great words as we examine them today. Our only hope may be to meditate in the consistency and reliability of God's word to be “faithful” to us. Each day we may draw from His endless and abundant supply of mercy and compassion, and we can know that He has these available to us upon each new morning. Perhaps as we have read these words we are in need once again of a fresh supply of mercy, or maybe we simply need to know that God's compassion is upon us. Whichever the case, let us constantly and consistently draw from His abundant supply and constant faithfulness to have prepared exactly what we desire in our times of need.

Next time we see what Jeremiah's portion is, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow...there is more...
