The Lord's Mercies and Compassion Lamentations 3:22

After remembering his affliction, misery, wormwood and gall which led to Jeremiah's humility, he recalled one more thing that gave him hope. He reveals what that one thing was in chapter three and verse twenty-two where we read:

It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

The verse begins, “It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed,...” Jeremiah knew the source of his very life was “the LORD'S mercies” or “goodness, kindness, and faithfulness”. It wasn't man's mercies, or a government's mercies, but “the LORD'S mercies”, and let us note the plurality of the word. The idea is that the LORD continued and continued to pour out his “mercies” upon Jeremiah so that he and those around him, “we”, “are not consumed” or “completed, finished, be at an end, ceased, exhausted and spent”.

The verse goes on to say, “... because his compassions fail not.” After he declares the unending mercies of the LORD, Jeremiah answers the question that many might have concerning why God would do this: “because his compassions fail not”. He declares that the LORD'S “compassions” which literally means “womb” or “the tender affection, special love, and natural affection” like a mother has for her child, never “fail” or “are completed, come to an end, are fulfilled, exhausted or used up”. The LORD has deep seated affections and special love for His children, and though Jeremiah is enduring great hardship, he knows that the LORD'S mercies and compassions will never cease.

This is one of the greatest offerings Jeremiah has disclosed in this book. When we are troubled with difficult situations and circumstances it will do us well to recall that God's mercies and compassions toward us will never fail, and they will never come to an end. This is what gives us hope, and Jeremiah demonstrated what a great benefit this was to keep these thoughts in our minds. He has unlimited “mercies” and “compassions” for those who put their trust in Him. May the Lord help us to remember how wonderful His provision is for those who love Him and have given their lives to Him.

Next time we see again how often these traits are available, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow...there is more...
