All Flesh is as Grass 1 Peter 1:24

As Peter the apostle continued his letter to the “scattered” Christians, he told them they were “born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which lives and abides for ever”. In chapter one and verse twenty-four of his letter, Peter shared how “all flesh is as grass” where we read:

For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass.
The grass withers, and the flower thereof falls away:

The verse begins, “For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass.” Peter began with the words, “For all” which means “on account of and because each, every, any, the whole and everyone” “flesh” or “the soft substance of the living body, which covers the bones and is permeated with blood” “is as grass” which refers to “herbage, hay or provender”, “and all” or “each, every, any, the whole and everyone” “the glory” which means “opinion, judgment, view, estimate, splendor, brightness and magnificence” “of man” which refers to “a human being whether male or female” “as the flower” or “in the manner of a blossom” “of grass” which refers to “herbage, hay or provender”. Peter likened every human to grass and the flowers thereof, and we read on to understand why.

The verse goes on to say, “The grass withers, and the flower thereof falls away:” Peter added, “The grass” which refers to “herbage, hay and provender” “withers” or “”, “and the flower” or “blossoms” “thereof” which refers to “itself” “falls away” or “perishes, loses, becomes powerless and without effect”. The result of the temporary nature of “grass” and the “flowers thereof” is they perish and become of “no effect” or without their original state.

When we consider Peter's words, we realize he is referring to the temporary nature of grass when sharing his comparison. The “word of God” lasts, and “all flesh” is bound to perish. The weight of our belief system must be based upon the everlasting “word of God”, and “the word of God” continually points to Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world. May we understand the importance of having the eternal “word of God” in our lives, and may the Lord Jesus through His Holy Spirit give us a passion to know and live out what He has to say.

Next time Peter shares how “the word of God endures forever”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
