In the book of Judges we learned, “then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it”, and in chapter nine and verse fifty-one of Judges, we learn, “there was a strong tower within the city” where we read,
But there was a strong tower within the city, and there fled all the men and women,
and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and got them up to the top of the tower.
The verse reads, “But there was a strong tower within the city, and there fled all the men and women, …” The writer began with the words, “but there was a strong tower” whose name means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover there existed a powerful and majestic elevated stage or pulpit” “within the city” which means ”in the habitation, abode, dwelling place and town”, “and there fled all the men and women” or “and at that location hastily ran and abated each, the whole and everyone of the male and female human beings”. The writer shared how there existed a mighty majestic elevated stage in the town of “Thebez” and everyone, both male and female, quickly ran to it.
The verse continues, “… and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and got them up to the top of the tower.” The writer added the words, “and all they of the city” which means “and every one of the people who belonged to the habitation, abode, dwelling place and town”, “and shut it to them” or “and closed up and guarded the town from them”, “and got them up to the top of the tower” which means “and ascended and climbed to the summit or precipice belonging to the elevated stage”. The writer shared how everyone of the people within the dwelling place were gathered to the powerful elevated stage, closed it off from those outside and ascended to the summit of the stage.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how there was a mighty elevated pulpit or stage within the city of “Thebez”, and everyone within the city hastily ran to it, barricaded themselves inside and climbed to the summit of the stage. God knew the location of all these people, and because He loves us, He knows where we are as well. When we yield to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and teach us the value of trusting in Him even when others are working in opposition to His perfect will. (See John 3:16; 16:13; Acts 1:8; Proverbs 3:5-6)
Next time we learn, “Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
