In the book of Judges we learned how, “Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother’s brethren, and communed with them, and with all he family of the house of his mother’s father, saying, Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh. And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baalberith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him. And he went unto his father's house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself” and in chapter nine and verse six of Judges, we learn how “all the men of Shechem gathered together” where we read,
And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo,
and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.
The verse reads, “And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, …” The writer began with the words, “and all the men of Shechem” which means “and each, the whole and everyone of the male human being who belonged to Shechem whose name means ‘back or shoulder’ and was a city in Manasseh; located in a valley between Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim, 34 miles (54 km) north of Jerusalem and 7 miles (10.5 km) southeast of Samaria “gathered together” which means “collected and assembled themselves with one another”, “and all the house of Millo” or “and each, the whole and everyone within the abode, habitation and dwelling place belonging to Millo whose name means ‘rampart or mound’ and was a place near Shechem”. The writer shared how everyone of the male human beings within “Shechem” and “Millo” assembled themselves with one another.
The verse continues, “… and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.” The writer added the words, “and went” which means “and departed, proceeded and moved”, “and made Abimelech king” which means “and caused Abimelech whose name means ‘Melek is father or my father is king’ and was the son of Gideon by a concubine to be the royal ruler and leader, “by the plain of the pillar” or “beside or alongside the locations pertaining to the terebinth or strong and great tree” “that was in Shechem” which means “that existed within Shechem whose name means “back or shoulder”. The writer shared how every one of the male human beings within “Shechem” and “Millo” assembled with one another and departed to cause “Abimelech” to be thrown royal ruler beside the terebinth tree that was located within “Shechem”.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how every one of the male human beings within “Shechem and Molli” assembled to cause “Abimelech” to be the royal ruler. This action took place at the “terebinth tree” located in “Shechem”. All this happened because the people of Israel forsook Jehovah God and began to worship “Baal”. Jehovah God desired to be the ruler of the people of Israel, however, they settled for less. God wants to be first in our lives as well, (See Matthew 6:33) and when we receive His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and rose from the dead after three days as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and give us the ability to remain in a relationship with Him and never forsake Him for any false God.
Next time we learn, “when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim”, so read ahead …, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
