In the book of Judges we learned how, “the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Did not I deliver you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines? The Zidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, did oppress you; and you cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hand. Yet you have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more. Go and cry unto the gods which you have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation”, and in chapter ten and verse fifteen of Judges, we learn how “the children of Israel said unto the LORD, We have sinned” where we read,
And the children of Israel said unto the LORD, We have sinned:
do you unto us whatsoever seems good unto you; deliver us only, we pray you, this day.
The verse reads, “And the children of Israel said unto the LORD, We have sinned:” The writer began with the words, “and the children of Israel” which means “and the offspring and progeny belonging to Israel whose name means ‘God prevails” and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob” “said unto the LORD” which means ”uttered, declared and proclaimed to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name of the One True God”, “we have sinned” or “we, the people of Israel, have missed the mark, gone wrong, incurred guilt and offended”. The writer shared how the offspring of “Israel” appealed to Jehovah God by admitting their error, wrong and fault.
The verse goes on to say, “do you unto us whatsoever seems good unto you; deliver us only, we pray you, this day.” The writer continued with the words, “do you unto us” which means “fashion, accomplish and perform to us, the people of Israel, the whole and total of” “whatsoever seems good unto you” or “that appears pleasant, agreeable and favorable to you, Jehovah God ”; “deliver us only” which means “nevertheless and indeed rescue, free and save us, the people of Israel”, “we pray you” or “we, the people of Israel, entreat, beseech and beg you, Jehovah God”, “this day” which means “upon this particular sunrise to sunset”. The writer shared how the people of Israel told Jehovah God to perform upon them whatever He deemed favorable because they solely wanted to be rescued and saved.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Jehovah God got the attention of the people of Israel when He told them He would no longer help them. They admitted their errors and wrong, and they told Him to perform upon them whatever He thought they deserved. They solely desired to be saved by Him. Sometimes God will allow people to get to the point that they have no other resource than to “cry out” to Him. God wants us to relate to Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the grave after three days. Rather than wait until we are in total desperation, let us humble ourselves, cry out to Jesus and receive forgiveness of sins, eternal life and His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and give us the ability to remain in our relationship with Him. (See 1 John 1:9; 2 Timothy 2:13)
Next time we learn how Israel, “put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
