In the book of Judges we learned how Jotham told the men of Shechem, “the trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign you over us. Hearken unto me, you men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you. The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign you over us. But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honor God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?” and in chapter nine and verse ten of Judges, we learn how Jotham said, “the trees said to the fig tree, come, you, and reign over us” where we read,
And the trees said to the fig tree, Come you, and reign over us.
The verse reads, “And the trees said to the fig tree, …” The writer began with the words, “and the trees” which means “and the the timbers, stocks, planks and stalks” “said to the fig tree” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed to the tree that bears fig fruit”. The writer shared how “Jotham” said the “trees” declared to the “tree” which bears figs the following words.
The verse continues, “… Come you, and reign over us.” The writer added the words “come, you” which means “proceed and move you, fig tree”, “and reign over us” which means “and have rule and have authority higher and above us, the trees. The writer shared how “Jotham” said the “trees” next invited the “fig tree” to proceed and have rule and authority above them.
When we consider the words in this verse, we discover after being rejected by the “olive tree”, the “trees” requested that the “fig tree” have rule over them. We can see there is a progression in this invitation, and we shall see how the “fig tree” answers in our next verses. For now let us consider the desperation of these “trees” to have something rule over them. Jehovah God wants to rule and reign over our lives, and He does this when we submit to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. As we choose Him to rule in our lives as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and to keep us under His rule and authority all the days of our lives. (See John 3:16; 16:13; Acts 1:8; John 1:12)
Next time we learn how, “the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness?”, so read ahead …, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
