In the book of Judges we learned, “then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it. But there was a strong tower within the city, and there fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and got them up to the top of the tower. And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire”, and in chapter nine and verse fifty-three of Judges, we learn, “a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech's head”, where we read,
And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech's head,
and all to brake his skull.
The verse reads, “And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech's head, …” The writer began with the words, “and a certain woman” whose name means “and a particular female human being” “cast a piece of a millstone” which means ”threw, hurl and flung a part of a chariot wheel or stone used in a grinding mill” “upon Abimelech’s head” or “on the physical head of the body of Abimelech whose name means ‘Melek is father or my father is king’ and was the son of Gideon by a concubine”. The writer shared how a particular woman threw a part of a stone from a chariot or grinding mill upon the physical “head” of “Abimelech”.
The verse continues, “… and all to brake his skull.” The writer added the words, “and all to brake” which means “and with every intention to crush and break” “his skull” or “his, Abimelech’s, skeletal bone of his head”. The writer shared how the particular “woman” threw the piece of the “millstone” with the intention of crushing the “head” of “Abimelech”.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn after all his destruction and killing, “Abimelech” was struck in the “head” with part of a “millstone” that was thrown down by a particular woman. We can imagine how boisterous “Abimelech” was in his attacks, and now, he was stopped by a “piece" of stone. God was in the process of delivering the people of Israel from their oppressors, and “Abimelech” was a big part of their release. Abimelech’s actions worked for a while, but eventually God would apprehend him by a woman. God loves the people of Israel, and He will come to their defense over and over again. He loves us as well, and when we receive His Son Jesus as our “Savior and Lord” who came into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and keep us aligned with His ways which never has need for a “millstone” to be dropped upon us before we believe. (See John 3:16)
Next time we learn how Abimelech, “called hastily unto the young man his armor bearer”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
