When Israel Saw Abimelech was Dead - Judges 9:55

In the book of Judges we learned how, “a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech's head, and all to brake his skull .Then he called hastily unto the young man his armorbearer, and said unto him, Draw your sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died”, and in chapter nine and verse fifty-five of Judges, we learn what happened, “when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead” where we read,

And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead,

they departed every man unto his place.

The verse reads, “And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, …” The writer began with the words, “and when the men of Israel” whose name means “and at the time and moment the male human beings belonging to Israel whose name means ‘God prevails’ and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob” “saw that Abimelech was dead” which means “observed, notice and perceived that Abimelech whose name means “Melek is father or my father is king’ and was a son of Gideon by a concubine” was lifeless, inanimate and without breath.  The writer began to share what happened when the people of “Israel” perceived that “Abimelech” was expired.

The verse continues, “… they departed every man unto his place.” The writer added the words, “they departed” which means “they, the people of Israel, left and went away” “every man unto his place” or “each, the whole and everyone to his, the people’s, location and dwelling places.” The writer shared how the people of “Israel” left to go to their homes after they discovered that “Abimelech” was “dead”.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how the death of “Abimelech” had a direct effect upon the people of “Israel”. Once they perceived that he was dead, they were free to go back to their dwelling places. God had rescued the people of Israel, and now they were able to go home. God loves Israel, and He rescued them from their oppressors. God loves us as well, and when we yield to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us into all truth and empower us to live according to that truth so we understand He is taking care of us even when we are unaware of His working. (See John 3:16; 16;13; Acts 1:8; John 8:31-32)

Next time we learn how, “God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
