Against Your Own Soul Proverbs - 8:36

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said of wisdom, “For whosoever finds me finds life, and shall obtain favor of the LORD”, and in chapter eight and verse thirty-six of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that sins against me wrongs his own soul” where we read,

But he that sins against me wrongs his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

The verse begins, “But he that sins against me wrongs his own soul: Solomon began with the words, “but he that sins against me” or “however, nevertheless, notwithstanding and moreover the person whether male or female who misses the way, goes wrong, incurs guilt and is forfeited in opposition to me, Jehovah God's wisdom” wrongs his own soul which means “does violence to and maltreats the person's own personal heart, mind, will, desires, conscience, living being and seat of emotions and passions”. Solomon said the person who misses the mark according to Jehovah God's wisdom actually does so in opposition to their own heart, mind and will.

The verse goes on to say, “all they that hate me love death.” Solomon continued with the words, “all they that hate me” or “each, every, the whole and everyone of the people whether male or female who are odious and as enemies and foes to me, Jehovah God's wisdom” “love death” which means “have affection and appetite toward ruin, pestilence and dying”. Solomon said every person who is odious to Jehovah God's wisdom has affection toward ruin and dying.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how the person who “hates” God's wisdom and way of conducting their lives actually do damage to their own heart, will and mind. They are affectionate toward “death” rather than “life” with God who offers forgiveness of sins and eternal life with Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield to Him, we have made the wisest choice we shall ever make, our sins are forgiven and we are promised everlasting life with God. God invites everyone to “love” His wisdom, but woe be to those who reject and refuse His offer of eternal salvation for their “souls”.

Next time we begin a new chapter and see Solomon say, “wisdom has built her house”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
