Ten Men Dead Amos 6:9

Amos the “herdsman” prophet shared how “the Lord GOD has sworn by himself” that He “abhorred the excellency of Jacob” and “hated his palaces”, and He swore to “deliver up the city with all that is therein” In chapter six and verse nine of his prophesy, Amos declared “ten men shall die” if they live in “one house” where we read:

And it shall come to pass, if there remain ten men in one house, that they shall die.

The verse begins, “And it shall come to pass,if there remain ten men in one house...” Amos began with the words, “And it shall come to pass if there remain” which is all one Hebrew word “yathar” which means “if there are left over or behind” “ten men” which means “ten persons or individuals” “in one house” or “in a single, each and every dwelling, habitation and abode”. When the LORD “delivered up the city”, each and every house would be examined for the number of people inside

The verse continues, “... that they shall die.” Amos added, “that they” which refers to “the ten men” “shall die” or “be killed, executed and put to death”. Should there be any house found with people, their destiny was death.

When we think about these words of Amos, we see the extent of God's displeasure with the people of Israel. They had strayed so far away from Him, their destiny was death and destruction. This was not the LORD's original plan. He desired for them to return to Him and be obedient to His commands, but they did not. Jesus Christ came into the world to have people return to a relationship with Him, and yet, many reject Jesus today. The Bible says, “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23), and those who do not receive Jesus as their Savior and LORD shall die in their sins, however, this verse concludes with a promise, “but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our LORD”. May all who read these words turn to the LORD Jesus before it is too late.

Next time we see Amos shares how some people will say, “Hold your tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of the LORD.”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
