A City Whose Builder and Maker is God Hebrews 11:10

The Hebrew writer shared how Abraham “by faith” “sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country” while “dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob” who were “the heirs with him of the same promise”, and in chapter eleven and verse ten of Hebrews, the writer shares how Abraham “looked for a city” “whose builder and maker is God” God where we read:

For he looked for a city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

The verse begins, “For he looked for a city which has foundations,...”. The writer began with the words, “For he looked for” which means “even as, indeed, no doubt, seeing then, verily and therefore Abraham expected and waited for” “a city” or “a town or place of habitation” “which has foundations” which refers to “that which holds, owns and possesses the beginnings, first principles and substructure of an object”. Abraham “searched for and expected to see” a place of dwelling that had a special and particular “substructure” beneath it.

The verse continues, “...whose builder and maker is God.”. The writer added the words, “whose builder” which refers to “a city that has an artificer and craftsman” “and maker” which means “and the author, artisan, framer and workman” “is God” which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Abraham desired to find the “city” that possessed a “foundation” that was “built and made” by God Almighty.

When we consider these words in Hebrews, we understand that Abraham did not know his exact location, but he continued to “search and look for” a “city” that had a “substructure” which was “built and made” by God Himself. This was no ordinary city, but one that was constructed by God. Even so, “faith” in Jesus Christ is the way of entry into the “eternal city” of God which is received by those who believe and trust in Jesus. As Abraham “believed” God for the earthly city, those who are wise shall “believe” Jesus Christ and gain entry into the “eternal city” that contains the greatest “foundation” of all.

Next time the writer shares how “through faith” Abraham's wife “Sara herself received strength to conceive seed”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
