God is Faithful 1 Corinthians 1:9

Paul the apostle desired that the church members in Corinth “come behind in no gift” while they were “waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ”, and in chapter one and verse nine of First Corinthians, Paul continued his letter by declaring how “God is faithful by whom you were called” where we read:

God is faithful, by whom you were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

The verse begins, God is faithful, by whom you were called ...” Paul began with the word, “God” which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “is faithful” which means “trusty, can be relied upon and confiding”, “by whom” or “through Jesus” “you were called” which means “the church members of Corinth were named, saluted and given a name”. Paul declared God “reliable and trustworthy” who had “given” the Corinthian church members “a name”.

The verse continues, “...unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.”. Paul added the words, “unto the fellowship” or “towards the “koinōnia” or association, community, communion and joint participation” “of His Son” which means “of God's only begotten Son” “Jesus” which means “Jehovah is Salvation” and is “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “Christ” which means “the anointed one, the Messiah and the Son of God” “our Lord” or “he to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”. The “call” or “naming” of the church members by God was to “spiritual fellowship” with “Jesus Christ” who was “the Lord” of Paul and themselves.

When we consider these words from Paul, we note his desire for the church members of Corinth to know “God is trustworthy and reliable” in their relationship with Him and His Son Jesus Christ. Jesus came to give all people access to God, and God is “faithful” to help them have “communion and joint participation” with His Son who is “Lord” of all. Those who yield to God's provision through Jesus shall know what it means to have “fellowship” with Almighty God.

Next time Paul begins to share his instruction that there “be no divisions among” the people within the Corinthian church, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
