Blessed are They that Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness Matthew 5:6

Matthew shared how Jesus was “baptized” and “tempted” by the “devil”, and he shared how “angels” ministered to Him afterwards. Jesus heard that John the Baptist was thrown into prison, and He left His hometown to dwell in “Capernaum” where He began His ministry. Jesus began to preach saying, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand”, and He called Peter, Andrew, James and John to be His followers. As Jesus' fame spread throughout Galilee a crowd of people were gathered unto Him as well. Matthew continued, “And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him, and he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth, and in chapter five and verse six of his book, Matthew shared how Jesus, “blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness” where we read:

Blessed
are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

The verse reads, Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: Matthew began with the word, “blessed” which means “oh how happy, supremely fortunate and well off” “are they” or “are the people” “which do hunger” which means “who crave ardently, seek with eager desire and need” “and thirst” or “are thirsty, painfully in want of and eagerly long” “after righteousness” which means “the state of him who is as he ought to be and the condition acceptable to God”. Jesus shared how people who “eagerly desire and long for” God's acceptable condition are “oh so happy”.

The verse continues, for they shall be filled.” Matthew added the words, “for they” which means “because, since and on account that the people who hunger and thirst after righteousness” “shall be filled or “will be gorged, fed and satisfied”. Jesus told His disciples that people who “hunger and thirst after righteousness” will be “satisfied” and “fed” with their desires.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus desires to have a relationship with people who “eagerly desire” and are “passionate for” God's right way of living. Those who “seek God's ways with a passionate desire will be “satisfied”. God wants to fulfill and complete everyone's desire for His “right” ways through His Son Jesus Christ, and those who seek Him shall not be disappointed.

Next time Jesus tells His disciples, “blessed are the merciful”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
