The Devil Departs Matthew 4:11

Matthew shared how Jesus was “baptized”, and he wrote, “Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward hungry. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If you are the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. Then the devil took him up into the holy city, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, And said unto him, If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning you: and in their hands they shall bear you up, lest at any time you dash your foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, you shall not tempt the Lord your God. Again, the devil took him up into an exceeding high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And said unto him, All these things will I give you, if you will fall down and worship me. Then said Jesus unto him, Get you hence, Satan: for it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve, and in chapter four and verse eleven of his book, Matthew shares how the devil “left” Jesus where we read:

Then the devil left him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

The verse reads, Then the devil left him, ... Matthew began with the word, “then” which means “at that time and moment” “the devil” or “the one prone to slander and accusing falsely” “left him” which means “departed and went away from Jesus”. Matthew shared how “the devil left” Jesus as commanded.

The verse continues, ... and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.” Matthew added the words, “and, behold” which means “and lo and see” “angels” or “messengers, envoys and ones sent” “came” which means “drew near, assented to and approached” “and ministered” or “served, attended to and gave supply” “unto him” which means “to Jesus”. Matthew shared how “angels” came and served Jesus after the “devil” left Him.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the spiritual world was aware of of the tempting of Jesus. The “angels” came to Jesus immediately after the “devil” left, and they “attended” to Him. Though God is not seen, He is well aware of people who are tempted by “Satan”, and His desire is to “save” them through His Son Jesus from their “sin”. Let all who read these words understand that God is aware of their “temptations”, and He stands ready to minister to those who “resist the devil”. (See James 4:7)

Next time Matthew shares how, “John was cast into prison Jesus so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
