In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it”, and in chapter nine and verse fifteen of his book Solomon said, “there was found in it a poor wise man” where we read,
Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city;
yet no man remembered that same poor man.
The verse reads, “Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city;” Solomon began with the words, “now there was found in it” or “at that time there was secured, acquired and discovered within the little city”, “a poor wise man” which means “an impoverished male human being who was shrewd, skilled and prudent”, “and he by his wisdom” or “and he, the impoverished male human being, through the means of his, the impoverished man’s, skill, shrewdness and prudence” “delivered the city” which means “rescued and saved the small, insignificant and unimportant place of waking, guarded town and dwelling place”. Solomon said an impoverished and shrewd male human being was discovered within the guarded little town who rescued and saved it.
The verse continues, “yet no man remembered that same poor man.” Solomon added the words, “yet no man remembered” or “still not any male human being called to mind, recalled and made a memorial of” “that same poor man” which means “that selfsame and equal impoverished male human being”. Solomon said no one recalled and brought to mind the shrewd impoverished man.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how the small city had an impoverished and skilled man living within it who rescued and saved the city. However, no one called to mind and made a memorial of him. In other words, though he saved them, the people of the city forgot the man. God gives gifts to people, and many times they exercise those gifts and are forgotten by the people who were benefitted by them, however, God never forgets. When we yield to his Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit who will provide us with gifts that may be forgotten by people but will never be forgotten by God. (See Romans 12:5-8; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11; Ephesians 4:8)
Next time Solomon says, “wisdom is better than strength”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
