Applying My Heart to Know Wisdom - Ecclesiastes 8:16

In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “I commended mirth, because a man has no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labor the days of his life, which God gives him under the sun”, and in chapter eight and verse sixteen of his book Solomon said, “I applied my heart to know wisdom” where we read,

When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night sees sleep with his eyes:)

The verse reads, “When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth:” Solomon began with the words, “when I applied my heart” or “at the time and moment I, Solomon, gave, assigned, ascribed and committed my, Solomon’s, soul and mind” “to know wisdom” which means “to perceive, discern, learn and recognize skill, shrewdness and prudence”, “and to see the business” or “and to perceive, inspect, consider and observe the occupation, job and travail” “that is done” which means “which is fashioned, accomplished and produced”, “upon the earth” or “on the land, country, territory, region and world”. Solomon referred to the time and moment he set his soul and mind to recognize skill, shrewdness and prudence as well as the jobs and occupations which were performed in the world.

The verse continues, “(for also there is that neither day nor night sees sleep with his eyes:)” Solomon added the words, “(for also there is that neither day” or “because, since and on account of that there exists in no way or manner the daytime period of time” “nor night” which means “no and not in any way the nighttime period” “sees sleep with his eyes)” or “inspects, perceives or considers rest and slumber by the use of the person’s physical eyes”. Solomon parenthetically added that rest and slumber escapes people in the daytime and the nighttime.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how he once again was determined to set his soul and mind toward shrewdness and prudence as well as the work that was performed in the world. He added parenthetically that the people who busy themselves with “labor” in the world are unable to rest in the daytime or nighttime. God possesses everything, (See Psalms 24:1) and we are all under His authority whether we acknowledge it or not. He desires to have a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. When we yield to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and help us conduct ourselves in a manner that is pleasing to Him and provides rest and peace to our souls.

Next time Solomon says, “I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
