In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him”, and in chapter eight and verse thirteen of his book Solomon says, “it shall not be well with the wicked” where we read,
But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he fears not before God.
The verse reads, “But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow;” Solomon began with the words, “but it shall not be well” or “however, notwithstanding, nevertheless and moreover the future will not exist as good, pleasant, agreeable, excellent or valuable” “with the wicked” which means “with people who are criminal, guilty of sin, ungodly and morally wrong”, “neither shall he prolong” or “no and not in any way will he lengthen and extend” “his days” which means “his, the wicked person’s, time periods, seasons and sunrises to sunsets”, “which are as a shadow” or “that exist similar and in likeness to a shade on a dial”. Solomon said the future will not be good for people who commit evil, and they will not lengthen their time on the earth which is similar to the shade on a sun dial.
The verse continues, “because he fears not before God.” Solomon added the words, “because he fears not” or “since and on account that he, the wicked person, does not have awe and respect” “before God” which means “in front and in the presence of the Supreme Deity Jehovah God”. Solomon said the reason it would not “be well with the wicked” and his “days” will not be “prolonged” is because he has no awe and reverence in the presence of the Supreme Deity Jehovah God.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon that the future will not be good for people who commit evil acts, and their time to be alive will not be lengthened. They do not revere Jehovah God, and they put themselves in an adverse state in front of Him. God wants us to be in a close, intimate relationship with Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was resurrected from the grave after three days. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and equip us with His Holy Spirit who will keep us from “wickedness”, help us revere Jehovah God and lead us into all truth so we live in a manner that is pleasing to Him.
Next time Solomon says, “there is a vanity which is done upon the earth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
