Man Cannot Find Out God’s Work - Ecclesiastes 8:17

In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night sees sleep with his eyes:)”, and in chapter eight and verse seventeen of his book Solomon said, “I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun” where we read,

Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labor to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yes further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.

The verse reads, “Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun:” Solomon began with the words, “then I beheld” or “at that time I, Solomon, looked, perceived, discerned and considered” “all the work of God” which means “each, every and the whole of the labor, toil and belonging to the Supreme Deity”, “that a man” or “that a person whether male or female” “cannot find out the work” which means “is unable to discover, expose and reveal the toil, labor, acts, deeds and undertakings” “that is done under the sun” or “that exists as fashioned, accomplished, performed and produced beneath the sun in the sky”. Solomon said he observed the workings of Jehovah God beneath the sun in the sky that exist without anyone being able to discover them.

The verse goes on to say, “because though a man labor to seek it out, yet he shall not find it;” Solomon continued with the words, “because though a man labor” or “since and on account that even if and whether a person whether male or female toils and works severely” “to seek it out” which means “to search, look out for, desire and request God’s works”, “yet he shall not find it” or “still he, the person, will be unable to discover, reveal and expose the acts and deeds of Jehovah God”. Solomon said even if a person diligently searched for all the workings of Jehovah God, they would be unable to discover it.

Finally the verse says, “yes, further, though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.” Solomon concluded this verse with the words, “yes, further” which means “even so and indeed, to an even greater degree” “though a wise man” which means “even if and whether a skilled, shrewd and prudent person whether male or female” “think to know it” or “intend, avow and promise to perceive, discern , distinguish and recognize to acts and deeds of God”, “yet shall not be able” which means “still the person will be unable to perceive, discern, distinguish and recognize the workings of the Supreme Deity” “to find it” or “to discover, secure, acquire and detect the workings off God”. Solomon ended this verse by referring to a shrewd and prudent person who attempts to perceive all the workings of Jehovah God but discover they are unable to reveal them all.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how the workings of Jehovah God are well beyond the ability for anyone to discover whether they have skill and prudence or not. God is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent, and His labors and workings are beyond our finding out. Paul the apostle wrote, O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!” (See Romans 11:33) This same God desires a personal intimate relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was resurrected from the dead after three days. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and teach us to trust Him with that which we know and do not know about the workings of God.

Next time we begin a new chapter and see Solomon say, “for all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
