The
Hebrew writer shared how the “high
priest”
offered “the bodies” of
“beasts, whose blood is brought into
the sanctuary”
but are “burned without the camp”.
The offering for “sin”
was not to be burnt within the “camp
of Israel”,
and in chapter thirteen and verse twelve
of Hebrews the writer shared
how Jesus “suffered
without the gate”
as well where we read:
Wherefore
Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood,
suffered without the gate.
The
verse begins, “Wherefore
Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood,”.
The writer
began with the word, “Wherefore”
which means “on account of, consequently, for which cause and
therefore”, “Jesus also”
whose name means “Jehovah is Salvation” and was “the Son of
God, the Savior of mankind, God incarnate” in like manner “that
he might sanctify”
which means “that Jesus might render, acknowledge, be venerable or
hallow” “the people”
or “the population gathered together” “with
his own blood”
which means “with Jesus' own bloodshed”. Jesus' purpose for
shedding His own “blood”
was to “sanctify” those
who would believe in Him.
The
verse goes on to say, “...suffered
without the gate”. The
writer continued with the word, “suffered”
or “was
affected, felt, had a sensible experience and underwent passion and
vexation” “without”
which means “outside” “the gate”
which
literally means “the leaf or wing of a folding entrance” and
metaphorically refers to “the access or entrance into any state”.
As were the “sacrifices”
for “sin”
burnt “outside” “the gate” of the camp, so was Jesus
“crucified” outside the city of Jerusalem.
When
we think through these words in Hebrews, we see how the “high
priests' sacrifices” were shadows or symbols of what Jesus
would eventually do Himself. Jesus offered Himself upon the cross for
our “sins” on Calvary's hill which was outside the city of
Jerusalem. His “bloodshed” and sacrifice gave us the ability to
be “saved”, and those who put their faith and trust in His
offering shall receive “eternal life”. Praise be to
Almighty God who well in advance had a plan to save us which would
allow for us live forever and evermore with Him.
Next
time the writer exhorts his readers to “let
us go forth...bearing” Jesus'
“reproach”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
