The
Hebrew writer referred to the response of the children of Israel when
God spoke to them on “Mount Sinai”, and the “sight”
of it was so intimidating that “Moses
said, I exceedingly fear and quake”.
In chapter twelve and verse twenty-two of
Hebrews the writer shared
how his readers “are come unto mount
Sion” where we read:
But you
are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God,
the
heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
The
verse begins, “But you are come unto
mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God,...”. The
writer began with the word, “But”
which is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be
written takes precedence over what was just stated” “you
are come”
which means “the Hebrew writer's readers have approached, drawn
near to and assented” “unto Mount
Sion”
which means “the hill or mount known as Zion or a parched place”
and refers to “the hill on which the higher and more ancient part
of Jerusalem was built”, “and unto
the city”
or “the place where one lives” “of
the living”
which means “the active, blessed, endless, fresh, strong, efficient
and powerful” “God”
which refers to the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of
God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. The writer of
Hebrews shared how his readers approached the “mount”
and
“city”
where the “active and powerful” God lives.
The
verse continues, “...the heavenly
Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,”. The
writer added the words, “the
heavenly” or
“that which exists in heaven by nature and origin” “Jerusalem”
which means “set you double peace” and was “the place above
that is existing in heaven which was according to the patter of which
the earthly Jerusalem was supposed to be built”, “and
to an innumerable company” which
refers to “an unlimited number” “of
angels” or
“messengers and envoys of God”. The readers of Hebrews entered
into the “spiritual” “heavenly
Jerusalem”
where God dwells with His “angels”.
When
we meditate upon these words in Hebrews, we see the writer's
comparison of earthly “mount Sion or Zion” to the
“heavenly Jerusalem”. The people of Israel were greatly
intimidated by the “earthly mount” because of the awesomeness of
God, how much more should these readers be “filled with fear”
concerning the “heavenly” one? Jesus Christ was the only
“holy” person who could enter the “holy” city
of God, and He did so to make intercession for us. We should remember
that God dwells with His angels in a spiritual place that is so
“holy” everyone should be intimidated, however, because of
Jesus we may humbly approach Almighty God in His “holy dwelling”.
Next
time the writer shares concerning “the
general assembly and church of the firstborn”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
