The
readers of Hebrews were exhorted to let their way of living be
“without covetousness”
and to be “content with such things
as” they
had because the Lord promised never to “leave” or “forsake”
them. This allowed them to “boldly
say, The Lord is my helper”,
and they could proclaim, “I will not
fear what man shall do unto me”.
In chapter thirteen and verse seven of
Hebrews the writer shared
how his readers should “remember
them which have the rule over you,”
where we read:
Remember
them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word
of God:
The
verse begins, “Remember
them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word
of God:”. The
writer began with the word, “Remember”
which means
“be mindful of, call to mind, think of and feel for, hold in memory
and make mention of” “them which
have the rule”
or “those who have power, governance, lead, command and authority”
“over you”
which means “concerning the readers of Hebrews”, “who
have spoken”
or “who have uttered, decreed, mandated, declared and given
discourse” “unto you”
which refers to “the readers of Hebrews” “the
word” or
“the words used in order to declare the mind and disclose the
thoughts” “of God”
which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised
of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. The readers
of Hebrews were to “keep in mind” the people who were their
“authorities” and who “declared” God's “word”
unto them.
The
verse continues, “whose
faith follow, considering the end of their
conversation.”. The
writer added the words, “whose faith”
or “those
whose conviction that God exists and is the creator and ruler of all
things and the provider and bestower of eternal salvation through
Christ ” “follow”
which means “to pattern after or imitate”, “considering”
or “looking
at attentively, considering well and observing accurately” “the
end” which
means “the egress, way out, exit and way to escape” “of
their conversation”
or “manner of life, conduct, behavior and deportment”. The Hebrew
readers were to “imitate” those who demonstrated “faith”
while
“considering well” the final outcome of the “way they live”.
When
we consider these words in Hebrews, we see the writer's exhortation
to “be mindful” of spiritual “authorities” who have “rule”
over us. This particular charge is toward those who declare “the
word of God” such as preachers or teachers in the church. These
individuals should demonstrate a “faith” that is well
worth “considering”, and because their “faith” and
trust is in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, they not only shall
conduct their lives according to God' word, but also “expect” the
final outcome of their “faith” shall be to live eternally
with God. Let us “imitate” those who live their lives in a manner
which is pleasing to God so that people shall “consider” our
“end” and choose to “follow” the Lord Jesus as well.
Next
time the writer shares how Jesus is “the
same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
