Make Straight Paths for Your Feet Hebrews 12:13

The writer of Hebrews instructed his readers to “lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees”, and in chapter twelve and verse thirteen of Hebrews the writer shares how his readers should “make straight paths for your feet” where we read:

And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way;
but let it rather be healed.

The verse begins, “And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way;”. The writer began with the words, “And make” or “prepare, produce and shoot forth” “straight paths” which means “ wheel tracks that are not crooked or courses of conduct” “for your feet” which refers to “places they step”, “lest that which is lame” which means “those who are weak in the faith who still have Judaizing prejudices” “be turned out of the way” which means “twisted out, dislocated, turned off or aside and so missing the way and losing the prize of the race”. (See Proverbs 4:27). So they don't vary off the path given by God, the readers of Hebrews were to make their ways “straight” and according to God's direction.

The verse continues, “but let it rather be healed.”. The writer added the word, “but” which is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be written takes precedence over what was just stated “let it rather” which means “to a greater degree, by far, sooner, more willingly, readily and sooner” “be healed” or “exercised of itself to contribute to health and the habit walking straight onward in the right way tends to well-being”. Rather than being “turned out of” God's way, the readers were to allow themselves to be “exercised” in their “paths” which would keep them “well”.

When we meditate upon these words in Hebrews, we note how the writer of Hebrews conveyed his idea from Proverbs 4:26-27 Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established. Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove your foot from evil.”, and his exhortation carries through to his readers. Jesus came to show us “God's path”, and He claimed to be “the way, the truth and the life” (John 14:6). Those who are wise will keep in God's “straight path” where they shall never find themselves wandering but rather “healed”.

Next time the writer tells his readers to “follow peace with all men”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
