Eunuchs - Matthew 19:12

Matthew the apostle wrote how, The Pharisees also came unto” Jesus” tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? And he answered and said unto them, Have you not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female. And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they two shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder. They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? He said unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, commits adultery: and whoso marries her which is put away does commit adultery. His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry. But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given”, and in chapter nineteen and verse twelve of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus talked about, “eunuchs” where we read:

For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

The verse reads, For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men:”. Matthew began with the word, “for” or “because, since and on account that” “there are some eunuchs” which means “there exists emasculated men who are incapable of begetting children and who voluntarily abstain from marriage”, “which were so” or “who existed in such a state” “from their mother's womb” which means “from the time they were born”: “and there are some eunuchs” or “there exists emasculated men who are incapable of begetting children who voluntarily abstain from marriage”, “which were made eunuchs” which means “who were caused to be emasculated men and are incapable of begetting children who voluntarily abstain from marriage” “of men” or “by other men”. Matthew shared how Jesus declared there to exist “eunuchs” who were made to be so from the time they were born and others were made so by men.

The verse continues, “... and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake.” Matthew added the words, “and there be eunuchs” or “and there exists emasculated men who are incapable of begetting children and who voluntarily abstain from marriage”, “which have made themselves eunuchs” which means “who have emasculated themselves and are incapable of begetting children and voluntarily abstain from marriage” “for the kingdom of heaven's sake” or “for the cause and reason of the royal rule and dominion of heaven which is the region above the sidereal heavens and the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings”. Matthew wrote how Jesus said some men have “made themselves eunuchs” because their passion was toward Heaven's kingdom rather than the earth's.

Finally the verse says, He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.” Matthew continued with Jesus' words, “he that is able” or “the man who is capable and has ability” “to receive it” which means “to betake, go forward, advance, proceed and succeed within this idea”, “let him” or “allow and permit that man to” “receive it” which means “betake, go forward, advance, proceed and succeed within this idea”. Matthew wrote how Jesus declared the man who is capable of accepting the “eunuch” role should be allowed to “accept and proceed with” it.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus noted the singleness that was given to some men. Rather than be married, some men were born without the desire or capacity to bear children, and they never desired to marry. Others were castrated by men to keep them from having children, and they remained single as well. Other men have taken a vow of celibacy whereby they have given themselves over to the Kingdom of Heaven rather than marry, and therefore they remain single. God knows the state of all people, and those to whom He has given the desire to marry, should marry, and those to whom He has given the desire to remain single, should remain single.

Next time Matthew shares, “then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
