Matthew the apostle wrote how, “Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. And he laid his hands on them, and departed from there.”, and in chapter nineteen and verse sixteen of his book, Matthew shares how one came to Jesus and asked, “what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?” the children where we read:
And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master,
what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
The verse reads, “And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “and behold” or “and look and see”, “one came” which means “a certain young man approached and came forth” “and said” which means “and declared, uttered, proclaimed and asked” “unto him” which refers to “Jesus”, “Good Master” or “pleasant, agreeable, joyful, happy, excellent and distinguished teacher”. Matthew shared how a young man approached Jesus and called Him “excellent and distinguished teacher”.
The verse continues, “... what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?” Matthew added the words, “what good thing” or “what pleasant, agreeable, joyful and happy act or activity” “shall I do” which means “should the young man make ready, prepare and produce”, “that I may have” or “so the young man might obtain” “eternal life” which means “age abiding and never ceasing absolute fullness of life, both essential and ethical”? Matthew wrote how the young man questioned Jesus as to what action he might take to obtain “age abiding life”.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how this young man approached Jesus not only by addressing Him with an appropriate title, but also sought Him for what He should do to obtain “age abiding life”. God desires to give people not only “everlasting life”, but also a life that is superior to the normal life people live. This life comes through a relationship with Jesus Christ as “Savior and Lord”, and when they yield their lives to Him, they shall find the “age abiding life” they have been missing.
Next time Matthew shares Jesus answered the man with the question, “why do you call me good?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
