Matthew the apostle wrote when Jesus and His disciples, “departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, you Son of David. And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, you Son of David. And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will you that I shall do unto you? They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.”, and in chapter twenty and verse thirty-four of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus, “touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight” where we read:
So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes:
and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.
The verse reads, “So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes:”. Matthew began with the words, “So Jesus” or “who is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “had compassion” which means “felt sympathy for, pitied and yearned” “on them” which refers to “toward the two blind men”, “and touched” or “adhered to and clung to” “their eyes” which means “the blind men's eyes”. Matthew shared how Jesus had “sympathy and pity” upon the “two blind men” and “touched” their eyes.
The verse goes on to say, “and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.” Matthew added the words, “and immediately” or “and straightway, forthwith and as soon as Jesus touched” “their eyes” which means “the blind men's eyes” “received sight” or “recovered and saw”, “and they followed him” which means “and the blind men joined and sided with Jesus as one of His disciples”. Matthew wrote how as soon as Jesus “touched” the “blind men”, they saw, and began to walk alongside Him as one of His followers.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus healed not only the physical “sight” of these “blind men”, but as they followed Him, they gained spiritual sight as well. Many people have lost their physical sight and would love for Jesus to “touch” their eyes and heal them physically, and even more people are “blind” spiritually who may turn from their sins, call upon Jesus, believe and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” and see. If life has one blinded who reads these words, turn to Jesus, call out to Him and discover that He is ready to “touch” and “restore sight” to the “blind” today.
Next time we begin a new chapter and see Matthew writes how, “Jesus” comes to “Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives” and “sends two disciples” on a mission, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
