Matthew the apostle wrote when Jesus and His disciples, “departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, you Son of David. And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, you Son of David. And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will you that I shall do unto you? They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse one of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus and His disciples, “drew near unto Jerusalem” and Jesus “sent two disciples” where we read:
And when they drew near unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage,
unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples,
The verse reads, “And when they drew near unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “and when” or “and at the time and moment” “they drew near” which means “Jesus and His disciples approached and came near” “unto Jerusalem” which refers to “to Jerusalem which means set you double peace and is the capital of Palestine”, “and were come” or “and appeared and came forth” “to Bethphage” which means “house of unripe figs and is the name of a hamlet between Jericho and Jerusalem which is close to Bethany”. Matthew shared how Jesus and His disciples approached Jerusalem and went toward the small hamlet of “Bethphage”.
The verse continues, “unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples.” Matthew added the words, “unto the mount” or “toward the rising above the plain” “of Olives” which means “pertaining to the fruit or berry of the olive tree”, “then” or “at that time and moment” “sent Jesus” which means “Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate dismissed and set forth ” “two disciples” or “two of Jesus' students, pupils and attendants”. Matthew wrote how Jesus “sent” two of His disciples to another place after arriving at the “Mount of Olives”.
When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus continues to reveal His plan step by step to His disciples. None of them knew what He had in mind as they traveled with Him to the “Mount of Olives”, but after arriving there, He “discharged” two of His disciples on a special mission. God always knows what He is doing, and He has a plan in mind even though His followers do not know all the details. Step by step He reveals His operations, and those who are wise shall yield their lives to Jesus and trust that He has a plan, and He will work it out.
Next time see Matthew share how Jesus sends the two disciples to, “find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them” to him, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
