Matthew the apostle wrote when Jesus and His disciples, “drew near unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse two of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus told His disciples to, “Go into the village over against you, and straightway you shall find a donkey” where we read:
Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway you shall find an ass tied,
and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me.
The verse reads, “Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway you shall find an ass tied, ...”. Matthew began with the word, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” “unto them” which means “to the two disciples He sent forth”, “Go into the village” which means “depart and leave toward the town or hamlet” “over against you” or “opposite, in sight of and before the two disciples”, “and straightway” which means “and immediately and forthwith” “you shall find” or “the two disciples will come upon, discover, notice and perceive” “an ass tied” which means “a donkey bound and fastened with a rope or chain”. Matthew shared how Jesus instructed His “two disciples” to proceed toward the nearby “hamlet” and immediately they would “discover” a “donkey” that was “bound”.
The verse goes on to say, “and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me.” Matthew continued with the words, “and a colt” or “the young of a horse or young donkey” “with her” which means “alongside the donkey”: “loose them” or “free and release them from their bonds”, “and bring them” which means “lead, guide and direct the donkey and her colt” “unto me” or “to Jesus”. Matthew wrote how Jesus told His two disciples they would also find a young donkey alongside the original one, and they were to set them both free from their bonds and bring them to Him.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Jesus is revealing His plan step by step as it pertains to retrieving a donkey and her colt. God always has a plan in mind, and in order to fulfill scripture, this donkey was necessary. God intentionally acted upon His plan even down to the detail of two bound donkeys to bring about the “salvation” of man, and those who are wise will consider all the efforts He has made so they may live with Him for all eternity. “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life”. (John 3:16)
Next time see Matthew share how Jesus tells His disciples to say, “the Lord has need of them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
