After he shared what Jesus had to say about marriage and divorce, in chapter nineteen and verse thirteen of his book Matthew the apostle shares how there were, “brought unto him little children” where we read:
Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them,
and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.
The verse reads, “Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray:”. Matthew began with the word, “then” or “at that time and moment” “there were brought” which means “there were lead to and presented” “unto him” or “to Jesus” “little children” which means “small infants and young ones”, “that he should put” or “so that Jesus would lay” “his hands on them” which means “Jesus' hands upon the little children”, “and pray” or “and offer supplication, worship and oration to God for them”. Matthew shared how people brought their small “children” to Jesus so He might lay His hands upon them and intercede to God on their behalf.
The verse goes on to say, “and the disciples rebuked them.” Matthew continued with the words, “and the disciples” or “and Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “rebuked them” which means “chided, reproved, censured severely and admonished the children and those who brought them”. Matthew wrote how Jesus' disciples “censured severely” the children themselves and the people who brought their small “children” to Jesus.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how people desired for Jesus to bless their children, and the disciples thought they were bothering Him. Oh how Jesus desires to bless all children, and those who would keep them from Him have no idea or perception who Jesus is. As the little song goes, “Jesus loves the little children – all the children of the world”, and when people realize Jesus came for “all children”, both those who are young and those who are old, they should yield their lives to Him and allow Him to bless them and bless them indeed.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus says, “Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
