Jesus continued telling the story about the unforgiving servant, and Matthew the apostle wrote more of Jesus' words as the king asked, “Should not you also have had compassion on your fellow-servant, even as I had pity on you? And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if you from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses”, and in chapter nineteen and verse one of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus, “came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan” where we read:
And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings,
he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan;
The verse reads, “And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “and it came to pass” or “and it became, happened, appeared in history and came upon the stage”, “that when” which means “that at the time and moment” “Jesus” whose name means “Jehovah is Salvation” and is “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “had finished” which means “completed, executed, fulfilled, performed and brought to a close” “these sayings” or “His uttering, declarations and proclamations concerning forgiving others”. Matthew shared how Jesus completed His words concerning forgiving others, and the following event occurred.
The verse continues, “... he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan;” Matthew added the words, “he departed” or “Jesus left and went forth” “from Galilee” which means “away and separated from the a region of northern Palestine, bounded on the north by Syria, on the west by Sidon, Tyre, Ptolemais and their territories and the promontory of Carmel, on the south by Samaria and on the east by the Jordan and means circuit”, “and came” which means “and approached, arose and came forth” “into the coasts” or “to the coastline and shore side” “of Judaea” which refers “in a narrower sense to the southern portion of Palestine lying on this side of the Jordan and the Dead Sea which distinguishes it from Samaria, Galilee, Peraea and Idumaea and means he shall be praised” “beyond Jordan” or “on the other side of the one river of Palestine which has its course of little more than 200 miles (300 km) from the roots of Anti-Lebanon to the head of the Dead Sea and means the descender”. Matthew wrote how Jesus departed from the “Galilee” area and approached the shorelines of “Judaea” which was beyond the river “Jordan”.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see Jesus and His disciples on the move again. This time He left the “Galilee” area after teaching the people about “forgiveness”, and He traveled to the “coastline” of Judaea beyond the Jordan river. Jesus continued to spread the gospel of the Kingdom of Heaven throughout the Jewish region, and eventually His “good news” spread to the whole world. Now God's “salvation” is available for everyone who will yield their lives to His Son Jesus, and when they do, not only shall they have “everlasting life”, but shall enjoy “eternal life” with God while on the earth.
Next time Matthew shares how, “great multitudes followed him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
