Two Blind Men - Matthew 20:30

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus and His disciples, departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him”, and in chapter twenty and verse thirty of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus and His disciples encountered, “two blind men sitting by the way side” where we read:

And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by,

cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, you Son of David.

The verse reads, And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “and, behold” or “lo and see” “two blind men” which means “two men who had opaque as if smoky or no sight” “sitting” or “were seated, fixed and remaining” “by the way side” which refers to “by the traveled road, concourse or journey path”, “when” or “at the time and moment” “they heard” which means “the two blind men were given the faculty for hearing, discerned, discovered and perceived” “that Jesus” or “that the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “passed by” which means “lead forth and away as to go along or depart”, “cried out” or “vociferated, prayed aloud and spoke with a loud voice” “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”. Matthew shared how the “two blind men” discovered that Jesus was “passing by” them and shouted aloud to Him as He walked by them.

The verse goes on to say, “... Have mercy on us, O Lord, you Son of David.” Matthew continued with the words, “Have mercy” or “have compassion, pity and divine grace” “on us” which means “upon the two blind men”, “O Lord” or “One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”, “you Son of David” which means “you offspring, descendant and posterity of King David whose name means beloved and was the second king of Israel and the ancestor of Jesus Christ”. Matthew shared how the “two blind men” wanted Jesus to be “compassionate, merciful and gracious” to them as they identified Him as the “Lord” and “the offspring” of “King David of Israel”.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see the desperation of these “two blind men”. When they discovered that Jesus was “passing by” their way, they “cried out” vehemently for Him to attend to their need. They called Him “Lord”, and they recognized His power and authority through the lineage of “David the King”. They believed He could help them, and they only needed that He acknowledge their despair. God loves people to come to Him with their needs, and when they recognize Him as the “Savior and Lord” of their lives through Jesus Christ His Son, He makes Himself available to their pleas with “compassion, mercy and grace”.

Next time Matthew writes how, “the multitude rebuked them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
