Receiving When Two or Three Agree - Matthew 18:19

Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus asked His disciples, “if your brother shall trespass against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone: if he shall hear you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear you, then take with you one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto you as an heathen man and a publican. Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven”, and in chapter eighteen and verse nineteen of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus shared what would happen, “if two or three of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing” where we read:

Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

The verse reads, Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, ...”. Matthew began with the word, “again” or “anew, further and moreover” “I say” which means “Jesus utters, declares and proclaims”“unto you” or “to Jesus' disciples”, “that if two of you” which means “whether two of Jesus' disciples” “shall agree” or “will be harmonious and in accord” “on earth” which refers to “the world, country, territory and region” “as touching any thing” or “concerning each, every, the whole and everything to be done or accomplished” “that they shall ask” which means “that the two or three who agree beg for, call for, crave, desire and require”. Matthew shared how Jesus presented the condition of “two” of the disciples “agreeing and asking” for “anything” upon the “earth”.

The verse continues, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.” Matthew continued with the words, “it shall be done” or “what the disciples agree and ask for will be accomplished, finished and completed” “for them” which means “for those disciples” “of my Father” or “by Jesus' Father God” “which is in heaven” which means “who is within the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings”. Matthew shared how Jesus said what “two disciples” “agree upon and ask for” on “earth” will be performed by God in “heaven”.

When we consider Matthew's words in this verse, we discover a promise given to Jesus' disciples. When “two” of Jesus' disciples “agree upon and ask for” anything on earth, Jesus promised that God in heaven would provide it for them. This must be understood with the idea these were Jesus' disciples who “denied themselves, took up their cross and followed Him”. In other words, they would not ask for selfish things, but rather things according to God's will and His Kingdom. God wants people to agree and ask for God's will to be done upon earth, otherwise they are followers of their own selfish desires.

Next time Matthew shares how Jesus tells how He is “in the midst” “where two or three are gathered together in my name, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
