Matthew the apostle wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, you Son of David. And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, you Son of David. And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will you that I shall do unto you?”, and in chapter twenty and verse thirty-three of his book, Matthew shares how, “that our eyes may be opened” where we read:
They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.
The verse reads, “They say unto him, Lord, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “they say” or “the blind men uttered, declared, proclaimed and responded” “unto him” which means “to Jesus”, “Lord” which refers to “he to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”. Matthew shared how the “two blind men” began to answer Jesus by addressing Him as “Lord”.
The verse continues, “... that our eyes may be opened.” Matthew added the words, “that our eyes” or “that the two blind men's eyes used for seeing” “may be opened” which means “may be opened up to see”. Matthew wrote how the “two blind men” desired for Jesus to “open” their eyes so they might see.
When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we discover the request of the “two blind men”. They wanted Jesus to make them see. Those with sight may not be able to understand how desperate these men were, but their desire would not be squelched by a silencing crowd. God knows the “spiritually blindness” within people, and when they call out to Him through His Son Jesus to help them “see”, He is always ready to extend His grace and mercy to “save” them and give them sight.
Next time Matthew writes how, “Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
