Matthew the apostle wrote how, “The Pharisees also came unto” Jesus” tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? And he answered and said unto them, Have you not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female. And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they two shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder. They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? He said unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, commits adultery: and whoso marries her which is put away does commit adultery”, and in chapter nineteen and verse ten of his book, Matthew shares how Jesus' disciples conclude, “it is good not to marry” where we read:
His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.
The verse reads, “His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, ...”. Matthew began with the words, “His disciples” or “Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “say” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto him” or “to Jesus”, “If the case” which means “whether the reason or cause” “of the man be so” or “pertaining to the married man exists” “with his wife” which means “with the married man's female spouse”. Matthew shared how Jesus' disciples began to formulate a conclusion based upon the idea of “divorce”.
The verse continues, “... it is not good to marry.” Matthew added the words, “it is not good” or “it is not profitable or expedient” “to marry” which means “take a wife or get married”. Matthew wrote how the disciples concluded that not getting married would be better if a man were expected to continue living with a wife who was contrary.
When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how the disciples immediately decided it would be better to never marry if all it was going to bring about a divorce, and Jesus will have more to say about their evaluation. Suffice it for now to know that God Almighty wants a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when that relationship is in it's correct position, the marriage relationship or singleness will be correct as well.
Next time Matthew shares how Jesus said, “all men cannot receive this saying”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
