In the book of Daniel, Daniel said, “In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel had a dream and visions of his head upon his bed” in which he saw “a lion, a bear and a leopard with four wings” and then he “saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and broke in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns”, and in chapter seven and verse eight of his book Daniel said, “I considered the horns” where we read,
I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.
The verse reads, “I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots:” Daniel began with the words, “I considered the horns” or “I, Daniel, thought about and contemplated the protrusions or musical instruments”, “and, behold” which means “and lo, look and consider”, “there came up among them” or “there arose in the midst and middle of the ten horns” “another little horn” which means “one other small protrusion or musical instrument”, “before whom there were three of the first horns” or “in front and in the presence of the small horn there existed three of the initial protrusions or musical instruments” “plucked up by the roots” which means “picked and rooted up from their fixed place”. Daniel shared how he was thinking about the “ten horns” when suddenly there appeared a small “horn” in which “three of the initial horns” were rooted up from their fixed place in the presence of the smaller horn.
The verse goes on to say, “and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.” Daniel continued with the words, “and, behold” or “and lo, look and consider”, “in this horn were eyes” which means “within this protrusion or musical instrument existed physical eyes for vision and sight” “like the eyes of man” or “similar and in likeness to a male human being’s eyes”, “and a mouth speaking great things” which means “and an orifice in the face used for eating, drinking and speaking that was declaring and proclaiming powerful and domineering words”. Daniel considered that within the small “horn” were physical “eyes” like those belonging to a human being, and it had a physical “mouth” that uttered domineering words.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Daniel how he began to consider the “horns” protruding from the “dreadful and terrible” beast, and as he thinking, another small “horn” arose from the “ten horns”. This “horn” contained human like “eyes” and a “mouth” which was speaking domineering words. We shall learn more about these things in our next few verses, but for now, let us try to imagine what it was like for Daniel to see these “beasts”. God had a plan, and He was working it out. He desired to offered redemption and salvation to mankind who were under the bondage of sin that leads to death, (See Romans 3:23; 6:23) and when we receive His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth so we never need to fear the visions and dreams He places within our minds.
Next time Daniel says, “I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
