Horns Cast Down and the Ancient of Days - Daniel 7:9

In the book of Daniel, Daniel said, “In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel had a dream and visions of his head upon his bed” in which he saw a lion, a bear and a leopard with four wings” and then he “saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and broke in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns. I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things”, and in chapter seven and verse nine of his book Daniel said, “I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit” where we read,

I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire.

The verse reads, “I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, …” Daniel began with the words, “I beheld” or “I, Daniel, looked and considered” “till the thrones were cast down” which means “until the royal seats of judgment were thrown down and cast aside”, “and the Ancient of days” or “and the advanced, venerable and aged One pertaining to time periods and seasons” “did sit” which means “were seated to judge”. Daniel shared how he kept watching the “little horn” until such time that the other royal seats of judgment were thrown down and cast away, and the “Ancient One” was seated to judge.

The verse continues, “whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire.” Daniel added the words, “whose garment” or “whose clothing” “was white as snow” which means “existed as brilliant white similar and in likeness to snow that falls from the sky”, “and the hair of his head” or “and the physical hair upon the head of the Ancient One” “like the pure wool” which means “was similar to clean wool material”: “his throne” or “his, the Ancient One’s, royal seat of judgment” “was like the fiery flame” which means “existed similar and in likeness to the shining burning fire”, “and his wheels” or “and his, the Ancient One’s, wheels like on a chariot” “as burning fire” which means “existed similar and in likeness to hot burning fiery fire”. Daniel shared how the clothing upon the Ancient One was as “white as pure clean snow”, and the hair on His head was similar to whitened wool. His royal seat of judgment existed similar to a burning fire, and the wheels below Him were like flaming hot fire.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Daniel about another magnificent site that was with His dream. This time the “Ancient of days” or Jehovah God appeared, and his clothing and hair were as “white” as snow and “whitened wool” as He revealed Himself among people. Daniel will share more about this in our next verses, but let us imagine this awesome and daunting sight. God will indeed intervene in the matters of mankind even as He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of everyone and resurrected Him from the dead after three days so when we believe and trust in Him as our  “Savior and Lord”, we will be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and provided with His Holy Spirit who will constantly reveal the truth to us as we continue in our relationship with Him.

Next time Daniel says, “a fiery stream issued and came forth from before him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
