Gideon Makes Ready a Kid - Judges 6:19

In the book of Judges we learned how Jehovah God told Gideon, “Go in this your might, and you shall save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent you? And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house. And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with you, and you shall smite the Midianites as one man. And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in your sight,  then show me a sign that you talk with me. Depart not hence, I pray you, until I come unto you, and bring forth my present, and set it before you. And he said, I will tarry until you come again”, and in chapter six and verse nineteen of Judges, we learn how, “Gideon went in, and made ready a kid” where we read,

And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: 

the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.

The verse reads, “And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour:” The writer began with the words, “and Gideon went in” which means “and Gideon whose name means ‘hewer’ and was the youngest son of Joash of the Abiezrites, fifth judge of Israel who led the Israelites against the Midianites, entered”, “and made ready a kid” or “and prepared a young male goat”, “and unleavened cakes” which means “and bread with no leaven or yeast” “of an ephah of flour” or “pertaining to a a dry measure of quantity, equal to three seahs, ten omers; the same as the liquid measure bath containing meal or meal flour”. The writer shared how “Gideon” entered his place, prepared a young goat and bread without yeast or leaven that was about three omers or a half-bushel worth.  

The verse continues, “the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.” The writer added the words, “the flesh he put in a basket” which means “the young goat’s body parts he, Gideon, placed, set and established within an osier or woven container”, “and he put the broth in a pot” or “and he, Gideon, set, placed and fixed the juice cooked from meat within a pan or skillet”, “and brought it out unto him” which means “and proceeded with the meat, cakes and broth toward him, Jehovah God” “under the oak” or “to the place beneath the oak tree”, “and presented it” which means “and drew near, approached and brought the young goat, cakes and broth to Him”. The writer shared how “Gideon” took the cooked flesh of the “young goat” and placed it within a woven container, put the meat juice within a pan or skillet and carried them and the bread without yeast to the location beneath the oak tree where the angel of Jehovah God was waiting. 

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how “Gideon” cooked a meal for Jehovah God, and carried to Him beneath the oak tree. God agreed to wait for Him, and He did. “Gideon” needed assurance of his calling, and God would provide it to Him. God knows we have need of His salvation, and He provided His Son Jesus to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth and empower us to live in assurance of God’s presence, salvation and employment in His Kingdom all the days of our lives.
