God Subdued Jabin - Judges 4:23

In the book of Judges we learned, “as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come, and I will show you the man whom you seek. And when he came into her tent, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the nail was in his temples”, and in chapter four and verse twenty-three of Judges, we learn how, “God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel” where we read,

So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel.

The verse reads, “So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan…” The writer began with the words, “so God subdued on that day” which means “wherefore, therefore and on this account the Supreme Deity humbled, brought down and put in subjections upon that particular sunrise to sunset” “Jabin” whose name means ‘whom God observes’ and was another king of Hazor whose general, Sisera, was defeated by Barak” “the king of Canaan” which means “the royal ruler and leader belonging to Canaan whose name means ‘zealous or lowland’ and was the fourth son of Ham and the progenitor of the Phoenicians and of the various nations who peopled the seacoast of Palestine”. The writer shared how the Supreme Deity Jehovah God put “Jabin” in subjection that particular sunrise to sunset.

The verse goes on to say, “… before the children of Israel.” The writer continued with the words, “before the children” which means “in front and in the presence of the offspring and progeny” “of Israel” or “belonging to Israel whose name means ‘God prevails’ and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob”. The writer shared how God “subdued” “Jabin” in the presence of the offspring of “Israel”. 

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Jehovah God was the one who defeated “Jabin”, his chariots, his army and his people, and He did this in the presence of the offspring of “Israel”. God loves Israel, and He provides for and protects them even when they have rejected and abandoned Him. God loves us, and when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and to be raised from the dead after three days, He made the way through faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord” to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and given His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and empower us to live according to that truth as we watch Him defeat our enemies and foes. (See John 3:16; 16:13; Acts 1:8; Romans 8:37)
