A Baby Needing Milk Hebrews 5:13

The Hebrew writer shared how his readers by now should have been “teachers”, but they needed that someone “teach” them “again the first principles of the oracles of God”. In chapter five and verse thirteen of Hebrews we see how “babes” in Christ are “unskillful in the word of righteousness” where we read:

For every one that uses milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

The verse begins, “For every one that uses milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness:” The writer began with the words, “For every one” which means “because, even, indeed, no doubt, seeing then and therefore each, all and the whole of people” “that uses milk” or “becomes partaker of the less difficult Christian truths” “is unskilful” which means “inexperienced and ignorant” “in the word” or “the speech, uttering, concepts or ideas” “of righteousness” which means “the state of him who is as he ought to be and in the condition acceptable to God”. Those who use only “the milk” of God's word are “inexperienced” in the “right” ways before Him.

The verse goes on to say, “for he is a babe”. The writer continued, “For he” which means “the one who uses milk” “is a babe” which literally means “an infant, little child, minor and not of age” and metaphorically means “childish, untaught and unskilled. The Hebrews writers who were in need of “milk” alone from the word of God were considered “unskillful and childish” in God's concepts and ideas and is much like a “baby” who only desires milk for nourishment.

When we think through these words in Hebrews, we should be challenged to “grow” in the knowledge of God's word. To do otherwise will be to remain as a child in the faith. Jesus Christ desires that we first know Him as Savior and Lord, and then we are to “mature” in the faith through the study of His word. Too many Christians remain “childish, untaught and unskilled” in the word of God, and their “concepts and ideas” of God remain as “babes”. Let us be challenged by the Hebrew writer to “grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ”.

Next time we see the writer share about to whom the “strong meat” of God's word belongs, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
