Judas Betrayed Innocent Blood - Matthew 27:4

Matthew the apostle wrote how “ Judas, which had betrayed” Jesus “when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse four of his book, Matthew wrote how Judas said, “I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood” where we read:

Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood.

And they said, What is that to us? see you to that.

The verse reads, Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood.” Matthew began word, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “I have sinned or “I have missed the mark, erred, been mistaken and violated God's law” “in that I have betrayed” which means “because Judas delivered up Jesus treacherously and committed Him to the chief priests“the innocent blood” or “the blood of the not guilty and unpunished”. Matthew shared how Judas declared that he “delivered to the religious leaders” One who is “not guilty” of any crimes or violations to God's law.

The verse continues, “And they said, What is that to us? see you to that.” Matthew added the words, “and they said” or “and the high priests and elders uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “what is that to us” which means “what does that mean in regard to, hear, towards and to the advantage of the religious leaders”? “see you to that” or “you pay attention and give heed to that Judas”. Matthew shared how the religious leaders were not moved by Judas' plea, and they put the “guilt” and “shame” of “betraying” Jesus, who was indeed “innocent”, directly back on him.

When we think through Matthew's words in this verse, we see how Judas made a desperate plea to the “religious leaders” concerning Jesus being “innocent” and without merit for “betrayal”. However, it was too late. The “chief priests and elders” had what they wanted, and though Judas made his appeal, they were not concerned with his regret. There is only one chance for some things, and Judas had his opportunity. Now, everything was in motion for Jesus to pay the price for the sins of the whole world. Regret and pleading do not change some things, and yet, those who come humbly before Jesus, repent of their “sins” and yield their lives to Him shall be forgiven of their sins and inherit the promise of “everlasting life” with God.

Next time Matthew shares how Judas, “cast down the pieces of silver in the temple”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
