What Shall I Do with Jesus? - Matthew 27:22

Matthew the apostle wrote, “Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would. And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas. Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will you that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ? For he knew that for envy they had delivered him. When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him. But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will you that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.”, and in chapter twenty-seven and verse twenty-two of his book, Matthew wrote how Pilate asked, “what shall I do then with Jesus?” where we read:

Pilate said unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ?

They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.

The verse reads, “Pilate said unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? Matthew began word, “Pilate” whose name means “armed with a spear” and was “the sixth Roman procurator of Judah and Samaria who ordered Christ to be crucified” “said unto them or “uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked the religious leaders and elders”, “what shall I do then” which means “what did the religious leaders and elders want Pilate to render, ordain and appoint” “with Jesus” which means “with Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “which is called” or “who is affirmed, spoken of, mentioned, declared and described as” “Christ” which means “the anointed One, the Messiah and Son of God”. Matthew shared how Pilate wanted to know what the “religious leaders and elders” thought he should do with Jesus.

The verse goes on to say, “They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.” Matthew continued with the words, “they all say” or “each, every, the whole and everyone of the religious leaders and elders uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto him” which means “to Pilate”, “Let him” or “allow and permit Jesus to” “be crucified” which means “be stake driven, fortified with stakes, to palisade and hung on a cross until He dies”. Matthew shared how the religious leaders and elders told Plate they wanted Jesus to be hung on a cross until He was dead.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how vicious these “religious leaders and elders” were toward Jesus. Not only did they not choose Him as a prisoner to be freed, but they wanted Him dead. Crucifixion was the torturous death carried out by the Roman government, and when Pilate gave them to opportunity to decide what would happen to Jesus, the “chief priests and elders” told him they wanted Jesus to be “crucified”. God loves people, even these religious leaders”, so much that He gave His Son to die for their “sins” so they might live eternally with Him. Those who are wise will hear the demand of the “religious leaders and elders” concerning Jesus for their sake, and choose to ask Jesus into their hearts and lives as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Matthew shares how Pilate asked, “why, what evil has he done?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
