Why Do You Trouble the Woman? - Matthew 26:10

Matthew the apostle wrote how a woman came to Jesus, having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat. But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, to what purpose is this waste? For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor”, and in chapter twenty-six and verse ten of his book, Matthew writes how Jesus asked His disciples, “why trouble you the woman?” where we read:

When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble you the woman?

for she has wrought a good work upon me.

The verse reads, When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble you the woman?” Matthew began with Jesus' word, “when” which means “at the time and moment” “Jesus understood it” or “Jesus who is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate perceived, noticed, discerned and discovered what the disciples said about selling the perfume and giving the money to the poor”, “he said” which means “Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” or “to His disciples”, “Why” or “for what reason and cause” “trouble you” which means “do the disciples cause intense labor and toil toward” “the woman” which refers to “the female human being who poured out her perfume upon Jesus' head” . Matthew shared how Jesus “discovered” what the disciples said about the woman who worshiped Him by pouring out her perfume upon His head and asked them “why” they caused the woman “toil, labor and grief”.

The verse continues, “... for she has wrought a good work upon me.” Matthew added the word, “for” which means “because, since and on account that” “she has wrought” or “the woman performed, committed and exercised” “a good work” which means “a beautiful, handsome, excellent, eminent, precious, useful, suitable, commendable and admirable business, employment and undertaking” “upon me” which refers to “Jesus”. Matthew shared how Jesus recognized the “excellent” undertaking of this woman.

When we meditate upon Matthew's words in this verse, we see how different Jesus' appraisal of this woman's offering was from the disciples'. God recognizes the value of a true offering of worship, and when people come to Him through His Son Jesus, they align themselves with God's plan of salvation for man. Regardless of what others think about offerings to God, those who offer them should know He knows the eternal value of what they have done. Let all who read these words “worship” Him.

Next time Matthew shares how Jesus told His disciples, “you have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
