Sow Your Seed in the Morning - Ecclesiastes 11:6

In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “He that observes the wind shall not sow; and he that regards the clouds shall not reap. As you know not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so you know not the works of God who makes all”, and in chapter eleven and verse six of his book Solomon said, “in the morning sow your seed” where we read,

In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening withhold not your hand:

For you know not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.

The verse reads, “In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening withhold not your hand:” Solomon began with the words, “in the morning” or “within the break of day or dawn” “sow your seed” which means “shoot forth and scatter your, Solomon’s readers’, sowing time seed”, “and in the evening” or “and within the sunset or beginning of the night” “withhold not your hand” which means “do not rest, settle down, make quiet or abandon your, Solomon’s readers’, hand of power, might, strength and ability”. Solomon instructed his readers to scatter their sowing seeds at sunrise or dawn and within the sunset time they were not to abandon their physical hands of strength and ability.

The verse continues, “For you know not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.” Solomon added the words, “for you know not” or “because, since and on account that you, Solomon’s readers, were unaware and unable to discern” “whether shall prosper” which means “if and in case the following will succeed, be suitable, be advantageous and right”, “either this or that” or “from this activity or that activity”, “or whether they both” which means “or if and in case they, both of the activities” “shall be alike good” or “will exist similarly good, pleasant, agreeable, excellent and valuable”. Solomon said the reason his readers were to scatter their seed in the morning and to continue to be active throughout the day was because they were unaware of which activity would be advantageous or perhaps each of them would be valuable.

When we meditate upon Solomon’s words in this verse, we see how he desired that his readers stay active and busy throughout the day. Beginning at dawn and into the evening, they were to be performing activities that could produce excellent results. They did not know the future, but God does, and because He wants us to have faith and trust in Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days, when we submit to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and keep us active through His Holy Spirit as we seek His Kingdom first and His righteous ways. (See Matthew 6:33)

Next time Solomon says, “truly the light is sweet”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
