Paul
the apostle shared with the church members in Corinth, “
Be you not unequally yoked together with unbelievers”,
and he questioned, “for what
fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what
communion has light with darkness? And what concord has Christ with
Belial? or what part has he that believes with an infidel?”,
and in
chapter six and verse sixteen of Second Corinthians, Paul told the
church members, “your are the temple of the
living God”
where we read:
And what
agreement has the temple of God with idols? for you are the temple of
the living God; as God has said, I will dwell in them, and walk in
them; and I
will be their God, and they shall be my people.
The verse begins, “And
what agreement has the temple of God with idols? for you are the
temple of the living God;” Paul
began with the words, “and what agreement”
which
means “and what kind of approval or assent” “has
the temple” which
refers to “the temple at Jerusalem, but only of the sacred edifice
or sanctuary itself which consists of the Holy place and the Holy of
Holies” “of God”
which means “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of
God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”
“with idols”
or “alongside an image, likeness or form of an object either real
or imaginary”? “for you are”
which refers
to “the church members were” “the
temple” or
“the sacred edifice or sanctuary” “of
the living”
which means “the fresh, strong, efficient, active, powerful and
efficacious” “God”
which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity”.
Paul wanted to know how “idols”
and the “temple of God”
were “approved or assented together” because the “church
members” were the “temple of God”.
The verse continues, “as
God has said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them;
and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”
Paul added the words, “as God”
which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised
of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “has
said” or
“uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “I
will dwell in”
which means “God will inhabit or live inside” “them”
or “those
who believe and trust in Him”, “and
walk”
which means “be occupied with and amble”
“in them”
or “within those who believe”; “and
I will”
which means “and God will” “be
their God”
or “be the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the
Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “and
they”
which refers to “those who believe and trust in Him”
“shall be my people”
or “will be God's tribe and nation”.
Paul shared how God Himself would “live and
walk” within believers, and He would be
their “God”,
and they would “be
His people”.
When we think through
these words of Paul, we see how he shared more examples of why
Christians were not to be “unequally
yoked with unbelievers”. God's temple has
no “agreement”
with “idols”, and “believers” in Jesus are His “temple”.
God declared that he would not only “live”
within people, but would also “walk” with
them. This connection makes “people”, “God's people”, and
make “God”, their God. Jesus Christ made all this possible, and
Christians should not compromise with those who are “unbelievers”
in this world
Next
time Paul instructs the church members to, “come
out from among them, and be separate”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then,
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
