Treasure in Earthen Vessels 2 Corinthians 4:7

Paul the apostle shared with the church members in Corinth, “for God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, has shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”, and in chapter four and verse seven of Second Corinthians, Paul shared how he and his companions, “have this treasure in earthen vessels”, where we read:

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels,
that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

The verse begins, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, ...” Paul began with the word, “but” which is a disassociation conjunction that means what is about to be written takes precedence over what was just stated “we have this treasure” or “Paul and his companions had the deposit and wealth of which he wrote” “in earthen” which means “within clay” “vessels” or “goods, utensils, implements, equipment or apparatuses”. Paul declared he and his companions' contained the “wealth” of the “light of the knowledge or the glory of God” within their own selves or “clay vessels”.

The verse goes on to say, “... that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. Paul added the words, “that the excellency” which means “so the superiority, pre-eminence and abundance” “of the power” or “of the strength, ability and miraculous mighty work” “may be” which means “might and should be” “of God” or “of the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”, “and not of us” which means “and not in the least Paul and his companions”. Paul shared how the origin of the “power” of the “gospel” was from God and not from he and his companions.

When we think through these words of Paul, we see how God was responsible for the “gospel” being put within he and his companions. This is true for everyone who receives Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”. Jesus Christ gives the “ability” for us to know His “gospel”, and although He uses people to share His “good news”, God Almighty is responsible for the delivery of His message.

Next time Paul tells the church members, “persecuted, but not forsaken”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then,

Until tomorrow…there is more…
