A New Creation in Christ 2 Corinthians 5:17

Paul the apostle told the Corinthian church members he and his companions, “know we no man after the flesh:” and he continued, “yes, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.” In chapter five and verse seventeen of Second Corinthians, Paul told the church members, “if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature” where we read:

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away;

behold, all things are become new.

The verse begins, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature:” Paul began with the word, “therefore” which means “so that, insomuch and wherefore” “if any man” or “whosoever whether any human being male or female” “be in Christ” which refers to “in a fixed position with the anointed One, the Messiah and the Son of God”, “he is a new” or “the whosoever person is made fresh, recent, unprecedented, novel, uncommon and unheard of” “creature” which means “creation”. Paul declared any person who is “in Christ”, which means they trust in, rely upon and cling to Jesus, is a “fresh, novel and unheard of before creation”.

The verse continues, “old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” Paul added the words, “old things” which means “activities, actions and attitudes from the original, beginning and primal parts of a person's life” “are passed away” or “perished, carried of, averted and omitted”; “behold” which means “lo and see”, “all things” or “each, every, the whole and everyone” “are become new” which means “are made, happened, and come to pass and on the stage fresh, recent, unprecedented, novel, uncommon and unheard of”. Paul shared how all the “old ways and traits” of a person's life are “perished”, and their life in every way has become “new”.

When we consider these words of Paul, we see when a person receives Jesus Christ as their “Savior and Lord”, their old life is “perished”, and they now have a “new life” in Jesus. Everything from their past is “forgiven” and “forgotten” by Jesus, and they are made a new “creation” through Him. This is the “new beginning” Jesus is willing to give anyone who puts their “faith and trust” in Him. This is one of the greatest promises in the New Testament as God through Paul has declared how He will exchange the “old life” of a person for a “new life” in Christ. We should meditate upon these words and realize just how wonderful this promise is not only for ourselves, but also for every person who lives within our world.
